The Fischmarkt lies at Stade's old harbour, which was the heart of the Hanseatic town for centuries. Today the picture is shaped by restored half-timbered houses, cafés and restaurants — a lively place that has kept its history visible.

Around the Fischmarkt, the old town is wonderful to explore on foot: the Old Harbour with its historic harbour crane, winding lanes and the typical North German brick-and-timber scenery are right in our neighbourhood. A walk before or after your meal is always worth it.
From trading square to favourite spot
The name gives it away: fish was once traded here, landed straight from the harbour a few steps away. Squares like this were the economic heart of North German Hanseatic towns — market, transshipment point and meeting place in one. The names of the streets and squares around the Old Harbour still tell of that everyday life.
Look closely and you will spot traces of this history everywhere: old warehouse buildings, merchants' façades, the cobblestones. The Fischmarkt is not a restored open-air museum, but a square that simply kept on living — with cafés, restaurants and people enjoying their evening here.
Our tip for a perfect evening
Arrive half an hour before your table is booked and do the little loop: across the Fischmarkt, along the water to the wooden crane and back through one of the narrow lanes. Especially at the blue hour, when the half-timbered façades are mirrored in the water, the old town shows its most beautiful side.
After that, your table is waiting — on the terrace in summer, inside in the warm in winter. It is hard to fit more Stade into one evening.
